Behind the Site

Readers sometimes ask what goes on behind a magazine like this one. The honest answer is less glamorous than a newsroom and more like a shared kitchen table: a running list of questions, a few laptops, plenty of tea and a habit of trying things before writing about them.

Where the ideas come from

Most of our topics start as a problem one of us had that week. A living room that never felt finished. A birthday that needed planning in two weeks. A suitcase that would not close. When a question keeps coming up among friends, family or readers, it goes on the list. We also keep an eye on what people search for, because a question many people are asking deserves a clear, calm answer.

A week, roughly

StageWhat it involves
ChoosingWe pick a few questions from the list and agree who has the most hands-on experience with each.
TryingWhere it is possible, we test the idea: tape out the sofa, pack the bag, run the party timeline.
WritingA first draft, then a second reader who asks the awkward questions.
TidyingWe check links inside the site, simplify the wording and cut anything that sounds like a sales pitch.
RevisitingOlder articles get reread and refreshed when they stop being accurate or useful.

What we leave out on purpose

  • Medical, legal or financial advice dressed up as lifestyle tips.
  • Statistics we cannot trace back to a source.
  • Fake urgency, countdown timers or "only today" language.
  • Reviews of things none of us has looked at properly.

How the archive fits together

Over the years the site has collected writing on travel, home, events, style, gadgets, films and hobbies. Some older pieces were written in a different voice, and we are gradually bringing them in line with how we work today. New guides, like the one on planning a road trip or sizing a chandelier, show the direction: practical, warm and specific.

Small on purpose

We could publish more if we cared less about each piece. We would rather publish fewer articles that people bookmark and come back to. If something here helped you, or missed the mark, tell us through the contact page. Reader questions are still the best source of new topics we have.

For the people behind the pen names, see about us.

Behind the pages

Why we keep things small

We could publish far more articles if we cared less about each one. Instead we choose a handful of questions, try the answers where we can, and rewrite until the guide is something we would send to a friend.

That pace also gives us time to go back through the archive and bring older pieces up to the same standard.

What every article has to pass

Our final check, applied to new guides and refreshed older ones alike.

  • It answers the question in the title within the first few paragraphs.
  • Every number or rule can be traced to a source, or it is removed.
  • Steps are in the order someone would actually do them.
  • Safety-related tasks point clearly to a qualified professional.
  • A second reader on the team has signed it off.
